National Charter Monument - Bahrain
A Gift to the People
Translating Bahraini national identity, history and culture into a vivid and immersive visitor experience, commissioned as a gift from HM King Hamad al-Khalifa to the people of his nation.

To provide full research, content development and scripting for the National Charter Monument; a landmark cultural institution commissioned by the Kingdom of Bahrain to honour the National Charter and explore concepts of national history and identity through a series of dramatic, immersive visitor experiences.
Working directly with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, and alongside lead designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the brief required content that could carry the full depth and complexity of Bahraini culture, heritage and national vision across an extraordinarily media-rich environment.

We commissioned new research from experts at the University of Oxford and the SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in London, and collaborated with Bahraini environmental groups, schools, universities, and industrial and commercial sectors, building a research base that was both academically rigorous and genuinely rooted in the living culture of the country.
From this foundation we developed the full content and scripting across the building; a museum housing 57 interactives including 40 touchscreen-based experiences, 65 video monitors, 58 projectors and audio throughout, with game-based and collaborative interactives turning history and ideas into engaging, accessible encounters.
Traditional forms and spatial concepts, including the Majlis - a central gathering space of Arabian culture, were reused and reinterpreted throughout the building to celebrate different aspects of national identity, creating an experience that was simultaneously modern and deeply rooted in the particular character of Bahrain.
Spectacular films commissioned from Homerun Group in Copenhagen, immersive combinations of objects, text and images, and dynamic cultural storytelling environments combined to produce a powerful statement of national identity unique in the region.

National identity projects of this kind require something that most interpretive commissions do not: the ability to hold in genuine respect a culture and a set of values that are genuinely different from those of the team producing the content, and to find the narrative that speaks authentically to citizens who know this culture from the inside while remaining accessible to international visitors who do not.
That requires deep research, genuine collaboration with local experts and communities, and the discipline to let the material speak in its own voice rather than translating it into a Western cultural register.
The scale and technical complexity of the National Charter Monument, the sheer number of media elements, interactives and projection environments, also underlines something we find consistently on large-scale projects: narrative coherence does not emerge automatically from technical ambition. With 57 interactives and 58 projectors, the risk of content fragmentation is acute.
The narrative framework developed at the outset was the tool that kept every element of a deeply complex project pulling in the same direction.
